International R&D Scoreboard
The 2005 R&D Scoreboard contains extensive data on the top 1000 Global R&D companies and the top 750 from the UK.
The business climate for R&D companies has continued to improve in all regions but most rapidly for companies from North America.
R&D is concentrated in the largest countries, sectors and companies. The major nations have different R&D
specialisations and different proportions of R&D-intensive as opposed to Capex-intensive or service segments in their economies.
The largest 3 R&D sectors globally are automotive, IT
hardware and pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals, automotive and aerospace grew most rapidly amongst the top ten sectors.
Sector mix is shown to be the key determinant of average R&D intensity, the patent-to-R&D ratio and the dividend-to-R&D ratio for a country.
There are well-established links between R&D and company performance (sales growth, wealth creation efficiency) and market capitalisation.
